UN Mission in Colombia has 85% of registration of arms from FARC - EP

During a press conference, the head of the UN Mission in Colombia, Jean Arnault, highlighted the figures regarding the FARC-EP's lay down of arms process, monitored by the Mission.

"As for registration, we are at 85% of the weapons in the camps. This weekend we will reach a figure of approximately 7,000 registered weapons. On these weapons there are concerns: many are new and are short and long weapons, high caliber. It is a record that covers the range of FARC-EP weapons", said Arnault.

So far, the Mission has had its observers present in 23 of the 26 Areas and Points, although the registration of the weapons has been done in all points. As soon as the construction of the local headquarters is finished, the observers will be permanently in all Zones and Points.

Regarding the storage of weapons, the Head of Mission stressed that after delivery of the 140 weapons belonging to FARC-EP members participating in the Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (MMV in spanish), this process continues this week with the delivery of about 400 combatants' weapons that will come out of the zones for activities such us ilegal crops substitutio, humanitarian demining, pedagogy of peace, among others. With this delivery, the Mission expects to have 1,000 weapons in its containers.

Arnault also shared with reporters comments on the UN Secretary-General's report last week to the Security Council on the progress of the Mission in Colombia.
