UN Mission ready to meet new deadlines for the laying down of weapon

Bogotá, June 1, 2017. The UN Mission in Colombia is ready with all its logistical deployment and is in intense preparations to accomplish the commitments of the new deadlines agreed between the Government of Colombia and the FARC-EP.

The Mission has a total of 44 containers and 8 storage located in the 26 Transitional Local Zones for Normalization (ZVTN acronyms in Spanish) and Transitory Points (PTN, acronyms in Spanish) to receive the total of the more than 7000 registered and identified FARC-EP weapons for the date agreed between the parties, 20 of June.

The Mission has deployed 450 international observers and 72 civilian officers in the Zones and Points for the reception of the arms. In coordination with the FARC-EP and the Government, UN Mission is planning to accelerate the extraction of the coves to comply with the new deadline, 1st of September, established by the parties.

The Mission is also arranging for the disabling of individual weapons and their removal from the Normalization Zones.

In the coming days, the Mission officers will finish producing the certificates of laying down of arms to deliver to FARC-EP guerrillas and militiamen.

To amend the delays in meeting the schedule previously accorded in the Peace Agreement, the parties have set an ambitious goal of compressing within 20 days the laying down of all individual arms. The Mission mobilized its entire staff to allow the parties to accomplish with this commitment.
