"The Council will show its support for the peace process of Colombians": President of the UN Security Council.

Bogotá. May 2, 2017. At the beginning of his term as President of the UN Security Council for the month of May, Uruguay's ambassador to the United Nations, Elbio Rosselli, indicated the objective of the three-day visit to Colombia starting this Wednesday with all members of the Council. 

"The Council intends, firstly, to demonstrate its commitment to the tasks being carried out, show its support for the peace process that Colombians have taken in their hands and have been conducting admirably for more than five years the ambassador confirmed the media at the Security Council's headquarters in New York on Monday.

Rosselli stressed that Colombia has become an example of conflict resolution in leading its own peace process, requesting the UN to verify the ceasefire and bilateral and final hostilities and the laying down of arms between the Government of Colombia and the FARC-EP.

The visit will be under the leadership of Uruguay and the United Kingdom and will take place between May 3 and 5 with the purpose of demonstrating the support of the Security Council to the implementation of the Final Peace Agreement and the end of the last conflict in the Western hemisphere after more than 50 years.

Members of the Security Council will hold meetings with Government of Colombia, the United Nations Mission in Colombia, the Tripartite Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (MM & V) the Monitoring, Impulse and Verification Commission (CSIVI) including senior government officials and Leaders of  FARC, representatives of political parties, Congressional Peace Commissions, members of civil society, NGOs and the United Nations team in Colombia. 

The Mission includes a visit to a Transitional Verification Standardization Zone, with the company of senior government representatives and the UN Mission.

The members of the Council want to hear the voices of Colombians in order to understand the complexity of the peace process and support the efforts to achieve sustainable peace.
